Detoxification

Detoxification is the vital process of eliminating toxic substances from the body, mainly through the liver, excretion via stool and sweat. As an initial step of treatment, it includes addressing physical withdrawal and pain with appropriate medications following consultations with doctors. Achieving physical stability is pivotal for mental well-being. Within short period, individuals grappling with substance abuse, whether drugs or alcohol, start to recover, attending daily routines at the center and actively engaging in diverse group activities. It needs supportive surroundings and other therapies to complete the full process successfully.
Detox medications assist in ensuring the comfort of individuals in recovery as their bodies eliminate drugs.

The duration of withdrawal varies, spanning days to months, influenced by:

  • The specific substance of addiction
  • Duration of addiction
  • Mode of consumption (snorting, smoking, injecting, or ingestion)
  • Quantity consumed
  • Family history
  • Concurrent medical conditions
The Process Of Detoxification

Detox is different for everyone. It’s about giving personalized treatment to those with addiction. Here are the three main steps:

Evaluation

The medical team screens patients for their physical and mental health. Doctors refer blood tests to know the amount of the drug present in the patient’s body. This helps figure out the right amount of medicine to use. They also review the patient’s drug use, medical history and mental health history. This information forms the foundation for the patient’s treatment plan in the long run.

Stabilization

After evaluation, the patient moves on to the next step, which includes medical and psychological therapy. The aim of stabilization is to keep the patient safe and prevent harm. Doctors may prescribe addiction treatment medications to reduce withdrawal symptoms and prevent complications.

It’s important to remember that detoxification can be quite uncomfortable for some addicts. The experience varies depending on the individual’s physical and mental health.

Preparing for Treatment Entry

In the last stage of detox, patients get prepared to enter a treatment program. The medical team and therapists at the Sanity Welfare Society help patients understand the treatment process and what they can anticipate. Going into an inpatient rehab program provides the best chances of success following detox.

Irregular eating habits and drug or alcohol abuse cause significant risks, both physically and mentally. Prolonged substance misuse can affect one’s mental and physical well-being . Initially, an addict may not respond well to medical detoxification treatment. However, improvements usually become noticeable after 4 to 5 days, as the detox process gradually restores physical strength, normalizes eating habits and resumes other bodily functions. During this phase, a proper medication plan and dietary guidance are essential.

Following approximately 2-3 weeks in detox, the individual transitions to a recovery program. Physical recovery is followed by participation in awareness sessions. Engaging in recovery and grasping the program’s concepts require sound mental health, as it involves both the body and the mind. The duration of the detox program can range from 15 to 20 days for some, while for others, it may extend up to a month. Engaging in recovery sessions and understanding the program’s principles requires proper mental health, as it’s a holistic program involving both the body and mind. Consequently, the duration of the detoxification program can range from 15 to 20 days for some addicts but may extend to a month for others.

Sanity Welfare Society’s primary goal is to detoxify individuals who are grappling with drug or alcohol addiction. To achieve this, we prioritize discontinuing medication entirely or gradually tapering it off, as advised by our medical professionals. This approach is designed to help individuals navigate the challenging phase of addiction and move towards recovery.
